Eutrophication

Due to eutrophication, the Baltic Sea’s coastal zones are currently affected by large algae blooms, dead zones and reduced populations of predatory fish. Eutrophication is due to the release of nutrients, primarily phosphorus and nitrogen, from agriculture, sewage plants, individual wastewater systems and transports. The Foundation's projects range from demonstration projects in agriculture and industrial animal farms, projects for a healthier coastal zone, to research on measures to catch or bind nutrients.
